Original Dublin presents ‘Moore Stories’ , a new recorded collection of stories from traders about Moore Street past, present and future.
Moore Street Market is one of Dublin’s oldest marketplaces, this historical street has housed traders since the 18th Century. Moore Street lives and breathes the story of Dublin through the traders and stalls that have long lived on its cobbled streets.
From fruit and veg to more multicultural produce, the merchant culture of Moore Street is woven into the fabric of the city, home to generations of traders and welcoming many more to come. This street reflects the diversity of Dublin City, offering a variety of international foods and produce, and the sing-song of the fruit and veg traders luring in customers still rings loud and proud.
Beginning on Culture Night 2022 TASCQ has worked on behalf of Dublin City Council to bring new life to the area. This new activity has seen Moore Street garner a mix of modern traders selling all sorts of items including handmade jewellery, street food, bric-a-brac, clothing and more. TASCQ has also delivered a programme of events showcasing live music, street art, circus, theatre and childrens workshops over the course of the year. This has seen a reinvigoration of the area and the community there.
Expanding on what was achieved on Culture Night last year and the events which have taken place since, TASCQ in partnership with the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media, through the Culture Night Late Fund bring ‘Culture Night on Moore Street 2023’.
Culture Night on Moore Street will present a night time food and craft market, a stunning projected visual experience by Algorithm, live music with Fintan Warfield and Ophelia McCabe, as well as history tours with Diarmuid Breatnach of Save Moore Street from Demolition, and a collection of stories on film by Original Dublin. All creators take inspiration from the community, trading history and diversity of the area.
Algorithm and TASCQ have collaborated to push the boundaries of creative experiences that have been on Moore Street. Working with artists who have studied the area they will create a bespoke projection piece which will be projected onto the buildings at 15 - 17 where the decision to surrender was taken on 29 April 1916 and where Easter Rising ended.
The piece will display through creativity and cutting edge technology an immersive visual experience inspired by the trading history, community and diversity of Moore Street. The piece will run from 21st - 23rd September. This project will showcase the richness of the iconic street through immersive audio and visual experiences.
Our live music element will see musician, producer and educator MC Ophelia McCabe and LGBTQ activist, senator and musician Fintan Warfield draw inspiration from the works of Dominic Behan and the trading history of Moore Street. Warfields interest in Irish music, contemporary pop, storytelling and Celtic mythology blended with McCabes strong voice and mesmerising flow imbues and distinctively Dublin sound that is fresh and alive but deeply rooted in history and Irish heritage. We look forward to bringing the fruits of all these elements to life on Moore Street for Culture Night on Moore Street 2023.
There will be tours with Diarmuid Breatnach of Save Moore Street from Demolition starting from the side of the GPO in Henry Street and ending at the Rotunda,which will incorporate the history as well as evoking some feeling of what it must have been like to work in Moore Street and fight for freedom there.
A further element will take the form of documentary material that has been collected from recent interviews with traders and community members and recorded by Original Dublin. Join Original Dublin on a video journey through of one the city’s most storied thoroughfares, exploring the history of the area, its present state, and what the future might hold in store for Moore Street. The stories collected will be shown as a special documentary piece for Culture Night 2023.
